College Decisions

I'm in my junior year of high school and I think I have FINALLY narrowed my choices down to about five schools! I'm all over the place really. If you're happening to read this blog, feel free to recommend any schools. To me it seems to hard to choose a college to attend. Most kids at my school only consider in state schools (South Carolina) and I believe that there aren't many options for me in state. You may disagree. There are many things I look for in a college; diversity, a strong journalism/communications program, and opportunities to participate in musical ensembles (euphonium/baritone). Is that really too much to ask for? Oh yeah did I mention financial aid? I need that the most. My mom advised me to go to whatever college that I have to pay the least.

Well here are the five I'm considering.

1.) University of South Carolina
I chose USC because it offers most of what I ask for. It is about an hour and a half away from my home in Charleston. There is both a marching band and concert band(s). Football team is exciting. USC offers communications, journalism, french, and film studies. All of which I am interested in. There is also a study abroad program. The school is about 80% white which is not as diverse as I hoped for. The total cost is about $20,265 and the average financial aid package is $10,994 leaving me to pay $9,271 per year.

2.) University of Miami- UM is really in Coral Gables, FL right outside Miami. It's a private school and offers many majors, french, communications/journalism, and film studies. There is a much lower acceptance rate. UM also has a football team, concert band and many ensembles. Miami is a very diverse city with many things to do and never a dull moment. The cost however is much higher, about $45,088. The average financial aid package is $29,868, leaving about $15,000 to pay yearly, but there are many scholarships available. Study abroad is also available here. I can imagine Miami is more diverse than USC.

3.) Northeastern University- Like Miami Northeastern is private and located in a large city, Boston, MA. The acceptance rate is about the same as UM. Being that it is in Boston there will be many things to do. Northeastern offers Journalism, Communications, and Film Studies. I'm not sure about French. It does however offer study abroad programs in France. What is most distinguished about NEU is the co-op program which gives students opportunities to work within their field before they graduate. The school however is expensive and I'm not sure how generous they are with financial aid. The total cost is about $46,561 and the financial aid package is about $20,000 leaving me to pay about 26-27k yearly. Gah.

4.) Bryn Mawr College- Okay first it is an women's college in Pennsylvania, 20 minutes away from Philly. Really smart school. It just doesn't have a music program. It is also very small. What I liked about the school is that the acceptance rate wasn't very low and there is also an academic exchange with 3 other schools. Swarthmore, Haverford, and University of Pennsylvania. All of which are highly ranked schools. Bryn Mawr has a reputation for breeding highly intelligent women. The cost however is not cheap. It's about $51k, the average financial aid package is about 34,102 leaving about $16K to pay yearly. At Bryn Mawr one is able to take classes at the three schools and travel to Philly. I'm just not sure about the whole women's college thing..

5.) Mount Holyoke College- Mount Holyoke is another women's college. It is apart of a college consortium with UMass- Amherst, Amherst College, Smith College, Hampshire College. It is larger than Bryn Mawr. The town is not really near anything, yet it is in Mass so you could travel to Boston and NYC. The cost is about 52,476, but the financial aid is very sufficient leaving me to pay about 20K a year. Unlike the other schools the average need met is 100%. I like that.

Jamaica part 3

I haven't written in a while, so I want to get all of this in before I forget. After returning to the United States, I appreciated my time in Jamaica more than ever. Every day I think of Jamaica, I miss it so much. Between the days my dad and I traveled between small towns; Port Morant, Morant Bay, Port Antonia, and Kingston. In the Kingston Market they hounded me, every single person would say "Come have a look miss, come have a look". As much as I wanted to buy gifts for my friends and souvenirs, it was so annoying that my time there was short.I remember going through Jamaica seeing teenagers playing soccer; shirts vs skins or shoes vs. no shoes. Cows, horses, chickens, and goats all over the place! In Bath, Jamaica my dad, Mr. Aaron, and I went to this place Bath Spa and Gardens. Mr. Aaron is a resident of England, but originally from Jamaica. He stayed with us at Mr. Mac's house. Mr. Mac's house in the one pictures up top. Mr. Mac is my great uncle by marriage, my great aunt is dead. The spa was neat and a great place to relax. After that we were driving and my dad ran over a chicken. The chicken was crossing the road. Later on we headed to my aunt/grandfather/stepgrandmother's house in Morant Bay? I always confuse Morant Bay and Port Morant; to this day I still don't know the difference really. Being that the trip was happened so long ago, I don't remember what things I did on which days. Visiting my Aunt Joan was fun because she is a very animated person. Her three daughters are very adorable. In my next blog, I'll write about my time in Portland.
